VINTAGE SARGENT CIGAR CHEST / HUMIDOR CA. 1909 – PORCELIN OR MARBLE LINED & KEY Picture(s) and Description:
Up for auction is this antique Cigar Chest or Humidor, made by Sargent of Bridgeport, Conn. It displays a patent date of Dec. 22, 1908. It is a lidded chest made of an unknown wood, though it has the look of Walnut, with overall dimensions of 11 1/2" wide by 8" deep by 8" tall. It is assembled with finger joints, has brass handles on each end, a locking latch (with the key) and a piano hinge attaching the lid. What is very different about this piece is the interior. The bottom and 4 sides are lined with what looks like marble, but could be porcelain. The lid is lined with what looks like plaster. The walls and lid are a bit over 1" thick. When doing a patent search, the patent says that the walls are lined with ground cork to provide insulation and moisture control, and ground cork was also supposed to be mixed into the plaster as well. I obviously can't tell if that's the case or not. It is quite heavy, weighing almost 11 lbs. The interior appears to be damage free. The exterior is structurally sound, but it does have its share of edge wear, nicks and scratches, with a one serious gouge and one lesser one on the back side, the latter being on the back of the lid section. There is a very slight separation of the top piece of the lid from the sides of the lid section, mostly at the rear. It's just wide enough to put my fingernail into it. I have not attempted to polish, wax, or otherwise enhance the appearance of the wood - just a gentle clean up is all that was done. Overall, a really neat piece of history, especially for a tobacco buff. I have tried my best to provide detailed close up pictures of the actual item being offered for you to use in order to determine it's condition for yourself.
